Artificial Eye picks up four Cannes pix

Acquisitions include 'Desqueyroux,' 'Holy Motors'

LONDON — Artificial Eye has picked up U.K. rights to four more films at Cannes, using its latest acquisition fund Curzon Film Rights 2.

The new titles include Claude Miller’s “Therese Desqueyroux,” starring Audrey Tautou, which was the festival’s closing film; Leos Carax’s highly-buzzed competition entry “Holy Motors”; Chinese drama “Mystery” by helmer Ye Lou, which screened in Un Certain Regard; and French period drama “Michael Kohlhaas,” directed by Arnaud Des Pallieres, which is in post-production.

“Therese Desqueyroux” was sold by TF1 Intl., “Holy Motors” and “Mystery” were sold by Wild Bunch, and “Michael Kohlhaas” came from Les Films Du Losange.

These acquisitions follow Artificial Eye’s previously announced pick-ups of Michael Haneke’s “Love,” Christian Mungiu’s “Beyond the Hills” and an untitled film by Sally Potter, which is in post-production.

Curzon Film Rights 2, which Artificial Eye announced just before Cannes, is raised from a handful of private individuals, most of whom previously invested in the first Curzon fund, which launched two years ago.

The company said the new fund is significantly larger than the first, which was used to acquire 28 films. The target for the CFR2 fund is to acquire 40 titles over the next three years, with around 30% of the fund reserved for pre-buying international as well as U.K. rights, heralding a move by Artificial Eye into more substantial production financing.
