Acad to bestow other plaques, certificates on Feb. 11

For the first time since 2008, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is bestowing an Academy Award of Merit Oscar statuette to one of its Scientific and Technical Award honorees.

Franz Kraus, Johannes Steurer and Wolfgang Riedel will get Oscars for the design and development of the Arrilaser Film Recorder.

The Academy Award of Merit is the highest Sci-Tech award, and is reserved for innovations that have proven their value over time.

The Arrilaser developers are among eight groups of honorees who will be saluted at the Sci-Tech banquet, set for Feb. 11 at the Beverly Wilshire.

Receiving Scientific & Engineering Awards (Academy plaques) are:

• Radu Corlan, Andy Jantzen, Petru Pop and Richard Toftness for the design and engineering of the Phantom family of high-speed cameras;

•Dr. Jurgen Noffke and Uwe Weber for the design of the Arri Zeiss Master Prime Lenses for motion picture photography;

•Michael Lewis, Greg Marsden, Raigo Alas and Michael Vellekoop for the concept, design and implementation of the Pictorvision Eclipse, an electronically stabilized aerial camera platform.

•E.F. “Bob” Nettmann, Michael Sayovitz, Brad Fritzel, and Fred Miller for the Stab-C Classic, Super-G and Stab-C Compact stabilizing heads.

•John D. Lowry, Ian Caven, Ian Godin, Kimball Thurston and Tim Connolly for the development of a unique and efficient system for the reduction of noise and other artifacts in high-quality images; and

Fujifilm Corp., Hideyuki Shirai, Dr. Katsuhisa Oozeki and Hiroshi Hirano for the design and development of the Fujifilm black and white recording film ETERNA-RDS 4791 for use in the archival preservation of film and digital images.

Receiving a Technical Achievement Award (Academy certificate) are Andrew Clinton and Mark Elendt for the invention and integration of micro-voxels in the Mantra software, which permits efficient rendering of volumetric efects such as smoke and clouds along with other CG objects.
