Anthony Mandler eyes ‘Dead of Winter’

Commericials helmer attached to direct Hailee Steinfeld pic

Musicvideo and commercials helmer Anthony Mandler is attached to direct “Dead of Winter,” a Black List thriller written by tyro scribe Sarah Conradt that has Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”) attached to star.

Wind Dancer Prods. is financing and producing the pic with Hopscotch Pictures and Sherryl Clark’s shingle Busted Shark.

While Lionsgate was listed as the distributor when the script appeared on the 2011 Black List, months of negotiations have yet to lead to a deal, though sources tell Variety talks are ongoing.

Steinfeld is slated to play a teen who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and new stepmother — an experience he hopes will bring the two ladies closer together. When a dangerous fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up, the trio must put aside the family bonding to fight for survival.

Judd Payne, Matt Williams and David McFadzean will produce for Wind Dancer along with Hopscotch’s Sukee Chew and Clark.

Producers are aiming for an early 2013 start date, so if the elements come together, pic will serve as Mandler’s feature directing debut. He’s also developing “Last Days of American Crime” for Radical Pictures and “Die in a Gunfight” for the Mark Gordon Co. Helmer previously directed musicvideos for Rihanna, Jay-Z and Eminem.

Mandler is repped by UTA, Management 360 and attorney Michael Schenkman.

Conradt is repped by CAA, manager Sukee Chew and attorney Greg Slewett.
