AFI fest bows with ‘Hitchcock,’ closes with ‘Lincoln’

Galas include 'Life of Pi,' 'On the Road,' 'Rise of the Guardians'

A pair of biopics — “Hitchcock” and “Lincoln” — will premiere at AFI Fest 2012.

Along with those two films, respectively opening and closing the fest, AFI centerpiece gala pics include Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” Walter Salles’ “On the Road,” Peter Ramsey’s “Rise of the Guardians” and Jacques Audiard’s “Rust and Bone.” Screening of “Rust and Bone” will feature a tribute to Marion Cotillard.

AFI fest has become a well-timed platform for awards season hopefuls over the past few years. The New York Film Festival presented a sneak screening of “Lincoln” on Monday.

The fest’s special screenings will include docs “The Central Park Five” by Ken Burns and “West of Memphis” by Amy Berg; Sally Potter’s “Ginger and Rosa”; Leos Carax’s “Holy Motors”; Juan Antonio Bayona’s “The Impossible”; Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut, “Quartet”; Rodney Ascher’s “Room 237”; and Toronto favorite “Silver Linings Playbook,” from David O. Russell.

The AFI Fest will run Nov. 1-8 at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theater and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
