A twist for script

Beaufoy rewrites New Line's found-footage tornado project

Scribe Simon Beaufoy has rewritten New Line’s found-footage tornado project while Jeremy Sumpter has been cast alongside Arlen Escarpeta, Alycia Debnam-Carey and Nathan Kress.

Steven Quale — a longtime associate of James Cameron — signed on earlier this year to direct the tornado pic (formerly titled “Category Six”) in his second gig for New Line following “Final Destination 5,” in which Escarpeta starred. Shooting will start July 23 in Michigan.

Beaufoy penned “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” and has also been writing “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” for Lionsgate. Sumpter, a regular on “Friday Night Lights” who starred in “Soul Surfer,” will portray the brother of a cameraman.

Studio began developing the project last fall when it bought John Swetnam’s script and set it up with Todd Garner at his Broken Road banner. Story, presented through videocameras and cellphones, centers on high schoolers who try to survive a Category 6 tornado.
