Yuka Hoshino, marketing director, Paramount Pictures Japan

Women's Impact Report 2012: Executives

Hoshino, one of the few women at the highest executive level in the country in any industry (Japan has the lowest number of top female execs in major companies among all the advanced economies), helped spark the box office for Par Japan over the last year. Among the pics Hoshino and her team have handled since she took over as marketing topper in July 2011 are “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” Japan’s No. 1 foreign pic at the B.O. in 2011 with $68 million, “Transformers 3” ($55 million), “Hugo” ($13 million) and “Madagascar 3” ($26 million to date). Those totals showed vast improvement — compare those numbers to what “Transformers 2” ($29.5 million), “Madagascar 2” ($10 million) and “M:I3” ($44 million) earned in Japan.

What we don’t know: “Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt and his family and Tom Cruise visited Japan after the earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear plant disaster in 2011. They were enthusiastically received here and respected for their actions.”

Smartphone habits: “I can’t live without my iPhone. As a marketing director, I find experimenting with various social network services just fun!”

Work week: 60 hours

Life-work balance: “I do what I feel is both best and fun for work and family. I ask my heart and body. And I make no excuses.”

Charitable passion: “After (the disasters of) March 11, 2011, I donated for disaster reconstruction. I also visited several hot- springs inns in the worst-hit Tohoku area whose businesses had almost been ruined by harmful rumors. My purpose was to find out for myself what had happened there, while spending money to directly support the Tohoku people.”
