The main reason to see “Widows” is legendary actress Graciela Borges, known to fans as “La Gra,” who can almost make auds forget a C-grade boob-tube script like this one. Helmer Marcos Carnevale (“Touch the Sky”) has firmly settled into meller fare, and this tale of an older widow taking care of her husband’s hapless young mistress is all surface and no depth, except for brief moments when Borges manages to find a real emotion beneath the plastic. A good run at home in autumn 2011 could presage strong rotation on Spanish-lingo satcasts.

Docu helmer Elena (Borges) is making a film about women and love when husband Augusto (Mario Jose Paz) has a heart attack. Just before flatlining, he asks her to look after Adela (Valeria Bertuccelli, “Rain”), obviously his mistress. Elena’s not interested in comforting the distraught much-younger woman, yet she’s ultimately forced to take her into her home after Adela tries slitting her wrists. Transsexual maid Justina (Martin Bossi) is meant to expand the pic’s constricted bourgeois outlook, but the role is only half-written. Visuals are TV-bright and lacking depth, much like the music.
