Docu fest awards 'Encardia,' 'Italy'

Mediterranean films dominated the Thessaloniki docu fest’s 14th edition, which wrapped Saturday with top aud honors for Angelos Kovotsos’ Greek folkmusic road movie “Encardia, the Dancing Stone.” Pic, like international aud winner “Italy: Love it or Leave it” by Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi, follows protagonists around the byways of culture clashes.

In “Italy,” Hofer and Ragazzi drive around the country in a Fiat, weighing whether or not to move to Berlin as they light-heartedly banter over corruption, pollution and systemic dysfunction.

Fest director Dimitri Eipides introduced the kudos night in the seaside city’s Olympion theater, following 10 days of nearly 200 pics screening for an estimated 3,000 visitors.

The Fipresci prize for Greek film went to Nikos Dayandas’ “Sayome,” an offbeat look at a Japanese-Greek family crisis, while the jury’s international kudo went to Mexico’s “Canicula” by Jose Alvarez, for its depiction of the marginalized Totonac culture.
