‘Therese D.’ to close Cannes

Claude Miller's last pic stars Tautou

PARIS — Audrey Tautou starrer “Therese Desqueyroux” (“Therese D.”) the last film from late French vet helmer Claude Miller will unspool on the closing night of Cannes Film Festival.

Miller, who died April 4 after suffering from a long illness, had just completed the film, which is based on Francois Mauriac’s novel.

“What thrills me in the filmmaking process is to focus on the interplay of appearances, gestures, looks, behavior and to use them to try to intimate the inner lives of people, their secret garden, even though we only see them from the outside,” had declared Miller, who started his filmmaking career during the New Wave era, assisting such famed directors as Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut.

“By dedicating the closing night to him, the Festival de Cannes, along with his family, friends, producers, and distributers, is very pleased to pay tribute to the memory of Claude Miller,” stated the fest.

Some of Miller’s best known films include “L’Effrontee,” “Garde a vue” (Custody), “La Petite voleuse” (The Little Thief) and “Mortelle randonnee” (Deadly Circuit),

Miller’s 1998 mystery drama “La Classe de neige” (Class Trip) won Cannes’ jury prize.

Therese D.” will open Nov. 21 in France. TF1 Intl. handles international sales.

Cannes Film Festival will run May 16-27.
