Thai film fest set to launch

Hua Hin to bow with 'Always'

BEIJING — The first edition of Thailand’s Hua Hin Film Fest is set to bow Jan. 26 with the screening of South Korean pic “Always,” followed by the unspooling of 50 movies over four days.

Pics on offer will include Luc Besson’s “The Lady,” Taiwanese Oscar entry “Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale,” Hong Kong’s “Revenge: A Love Story,” and the first commercial thriller ever made in Laos, “At the Horizon.”

Festival director Sorajak Kasemsuvan said that as well as screenings, there would also be seminars on topics such as cooperation among Southeast Asian nations and the role of government in filmmaking.

There would also be discussion about other means for fund-raising, the potential of joint ventures and co-productions, and the issue of copyright protection. There would also be a movie workshop.

Hua Hin is where Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej holidays and the festival will be located at the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort and the Major Cineplex.

The fest is backed by the Federation of National Film Association of Thailand, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), as well as city and regional governments.

The film federation and TAT were both backers of the Bangkok Film Festival, which has not run since 2009. The backers were at pains to stress that the Hua Hin event is very different with its own identity.

The festival “will help to put ASEAN cinema on the world stage, and to present the many attractions of Thailand, and therefore assist the economic development of the Thai film industry,” said festival chairman Suwat Liptapanlop.
