3D stereographer

Portelli has a highly specialized job in a field “that’s still being defined,” says the 17-year veteran cameraman, who shifted his career focus for “Hugo.” He works with native 3D scenes, creating depth within each frame as the story unfolds. That work won him critical praise and an Intl. 3D Society live-action stereography award earlier this year. Portelli recently finished “47 Ronin” and is currently working on Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “The Young and Prodigious Spivet.” Next he heads into the post suite for the “Ronin” stereo pass, working in conjunction with the cinematographer, giving the 3D what he calls “a fine-tuning, like a sound mix where the depth will punctuate and contribute overall, like a multi-layered soundtrack.”
