Sorrentino’s ‘Place’ wins top Silver Ribbons honor

It nabs best director in Italo crix awards

ROME — Italo helmer Paolo Sorrentino’s Sean Penn-starrer “This Must Be the Place” took the best director prize at the 67th edition of Italy’s Silver Ribbons film awards on Saturday.

Sorrentino’s English-language road movie, in which Penn plays a retired star who finds redemption by pursuing a Nazi war criminal, is Italy’s most high-profile recent title, having played well at home, where it pulled $7.6 million, and internationally after launching at Cannes in 2011. The Weinstein Company has U.S. rights.

The ribbon for producer of the year went to Domenico Procacci for Daniele Vicari’s hot-button drama “Diaz — Don’t Clean Up This Blood,” about police brutality during the Genoa G8 summit in 2001.

Marco Tullio Giordana’s “Romanzo di una strage” (The Italian Conspiracy) about the 1969 Piazza Fontana terrorist bombing in Milan, took the nod for screenplay, while Ferzan Ozpetek’s “Magnifica presenza,” a Rome-set supernatural drama, was honored for best story idea.

As for non-Italian titles, Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Artist” won the nod for best European film, while Nicolas Winding Refn’s thriller “Drive” took the ribbon for pic produced outside the EU.

The Silver Ribbons are awarded by the Italo film journalists’ union SNGCI. Ceremony took place in the ancient Greek theater in Taormina, Sicily, as a coda to the Taormina Film Festival, which wrapped Friday.
