France’s ASC nabs Critics’ Week winner

A Contracorriente to release 'Aqui y Alla' in Spain

BARCELONA — ASC Distribution has closed all Gallic rights to emigration drama “Aqui y Alla,” which on Thursday nabbed the 51st Cannes Critics’ Week top nod, the Nespresso Grand Prix.

“Aqui” is the feature-debut of Madrid-born Antonio Mendez Esparza, who’s now based out of New York. It is co-produced by Spain’s Aqui y Alli Films and U.S.’ Torch Films.

The project was put through the Sundance Institute Scripts Lab in 2010. It also received backing from Sundance’s Cinereach fund, which provides grants for social-issue pics or movies furthering global cultural exchange.

Alpha Violet handles international sales.

Set in the Mexican mountains and shot with non-pro actors, “Aqui” turns on the life of a Mexican immigrant who comes back to his native land with his family, after some years spent in the U.S.

“The pic is a study on the concept of home,” said Mendez Esparza.

A Contracorriente Films will release “Aqui” in Spain.
