'Man Who Laughs,' 'Intersection' get pickups

EuropaCorp has inked a couple of pre-sales. Jean-Pierre Ameris’ epic tale “The Man Who Laughs,” a bigscreen adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel starring Gerard Depardieu, was picked up by Paradise (Russia), Benelux (Cineart) and Australia (Vendetta). Marie-Laure Montironi, head of international sales, said she was in talks with a U.S. distributor.

Pic, now in post, was penned by Ameris and Guillaume Laurant (“Amelie”). It’s produced by Incognita Films and co-produced by EuropaCorp. Delivery is skedded for December.

Meanwhile, David Marconi’s $12 million English-language action thriller “Intersection,” which toplines Frank Grillo, Jaimie Alexander and Roschdy Zem, has been acquired by Play Arte for distribution in Latin America. Pic is produced by EuropaCorp and Grive Prods.

It was recently picked up by Odeon (Greece), Scanbox (Scandinavia) and Universum (Germany).

” ‘Intersection’ is the kind of reasonably-budgeted fast-paced intense thriller that is very appealing to the international market,” said Montironi.
