Cinedigm snaps up ‘Come Out and Play’

Horror project premiered at TIFF Midnight section

Cinedigm Entertainment Group has acquired U.S. distribution right to Canana Films’ horror project “Come Out and Play” following its premiere in the Midnight section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Cinedigm, which made the announcement Friday, plans a theatrical release early next year followed by VOD, digital and DVD.

Story centers on a young couple (played by Vinessa Shaw and Ebon Moss-Bachrach) who have come to Mexico while expecting their first child, and rent a boat to visit an idyllic island off the coast. Everything seems perfect at first, but they soon discover that it has been mysteriously abandoned by adults and the only people on the island are menacing stone-faced children.

Pic is an English-language remake of the 1976 Spanish film “Who Can Kill a Child?” Film is directed by Makinov, an elusive director who keeps his true identity in a shroud of secrecy and directs while wearing a mask in an effort to enforce his personal vision of a cinema.

“We’ll admit that at first we didn’t know what to make of Makinov,” said Cinedigm VP Vincent Scordino. “That confusion ended upon seeing this provocative film. We can’t wait to introduce it to horror audiences, as well as anyone considering having children.”

The filmmakers were represented in the negotiation by Cinetic Media.
