Leading Mexican indie expands in Central America
CANNES — Underscoring further international market growth, Mexico’s Canana has closed Mexico and Central America on two Cannes prize-winners: Thomas Vinterberg’s “The Hunt” and Pablo Larrain’s “No.”
Canana also clinched Mexico rights to Romain Coppola’s “A Glimpse Into the Mind of Charles Swan III.”
Headed by Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Pablo Cruz and Julian Levin, Canana has pioneered upscale VOD, genre pic and indie 3D movie distribution in Mexico.
Beyond Guadalajara Fest headliner “Juan of the Dead,” this is the first time Canana has acquired for Central America.
The move rolls off extended runs for Canana titles in Mexico, which, like Central America, has been vigorously multiplexed.
“When we noticed our films staying at the Mexican box office for more than a year at a time, we knew it was time to expand,” said Levin.
“Central America is accustomed to big-budget commercial cinema and very few local productions: We’re happy to be shaking up the mix.”
Produced by Denmark’s Zentropa Entertainments, “Hunt” stars Mads Mikkelsen as a kindly, innocent kindergarten teacher whose life is wrecked by accusations of child abuse. Mikkelsen won best actor in Sunday’s Cannes competition prize announcements. “Hunt” opens December in Mexico.
“No” took the Directors’ Fortnight top Arte Cinema Award Friday. Participant Media-financed, “No” was co-produced by Chile’s Fabula and Canana. Based on true events, it stars Garcia Bernal as an ad man who ousts dictator Augusto Pinochet from power.
Now in post, Coppola’s “Swan” stars Charlie Sheen as an on-the-rocks playboy. Independent handles international sales.
