BVI ties down ‘Zip & Zap’

High-profile Spanish production rolls early summer

Buenas Vista Intl. Spain has acquired theatrical and home entertainment distribution rights to Oskar Santos’ family comedy “Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang.”

Pic promises to be one of the biggest Spanish bows of 2013.

Budgeted at €6 million ($7.8 million), a higher bracket for a Spanish film, “Zip & Zap” teams three of Spain’s most ambitious production players, Zeta Cinema, Mod Producciones and Antena 3 Films.

Vicente Canales’ Film Factory is selling the film worldwide.

Live-action movie is a bigscreen makeover of one of Spain’s most-popular comicbook series and reflects the film ambitions of Zeta, a top Spanish publishing group, to exploit the film and TV potential of its print properties.

Film tells how twins Zip and Zap are sent to a strict summer school where all entertainment is forbidden. They uncover a mysterious secret hidden within the school.

Oskar Santos — whose debut, the 2010 Alejandro Amenabar-produced “For the Good of Others” — was a international sales hit, co-wrote with Jorge Lara and Francisco Roncal.

Lensing from early July, “Zip & Zap” is also produced by Koldo Zuazua’s Kowalski Films.

Broadcasters Antena 3 TV and La Sexta share free-to-air TV rights; Canal Plus took pay TV.
