BFI London fest changes it up

Event will boost competition, add awards

The 56th BFI London Film Festival is boosting its competition and adding seven categories to its program to attract new audiences.

In previous years the fest awarded three prizes with all films playing in the event up for consideration.

Now movies will be split into three sections of 10-12 films comprising the official competition, whereby the winner will receive a best film award; the first feature competition, which will dole out the Sutherland Award; and the documentary section, which will hand out the Grierson Award).

The fest, which will unspool some 200 films Oct. 10 to 25, will continue to present a prize for Brit newcomer and the BFI Fellowship award.

“This significant change to the way we present films competing for awards will be a boost for both the film industry and U.K. cinemagoers,” said Clare Stewart, the BFI’s new director of exhibitions and festivals. Seven new program categories will be clustered around the themes of love, adrenalin, challenge, debate, cult, journeys and laughter (official titles yet to be announced).

Additionally, LFF has forged a partnership with Nintendo, which includes a gala preem screening and a short film competition using the 3D video recorder built into the Nintendo 3DS.
