Berlinale WCF backs international pics

'Mohammad,' 'Refugiado' among titles

BERLIN — Works from Egypt, Peru, Argentina and Kazakhstan have secured funding from the Berlinale’s World Cinema Fund.

Selected from 122 submissions from 43 countries, the films include Safaa Fathy’s documentary “Mohammad Saved from the Waters,” from Cairo-based Zero Production, which received Euros 30,000 ($36,552), and Argentinian helmer Diego Lerman’s “Refugiado,” from Buenos Aires shingle Campo Cine and Berlin-based 27 Films Prod., with $48,730.

The WCF awarded a total of nearly $200,000 in funding, including $48,730 each to Hector Galvez and Adrian Campos’ Peruvian drama “NN,” from Lima-based Piedra Alada Producciones and Autentika Films in Tuebingen; and Emir Baigazin’s Kazakhstani pic “Harmony Lessons, from LL Adigul Production Studio.

The WCF also provided additional distribution support for Indonesian helmer Edwin’s “Postcards from the Zoo,” which screened in competition at this year’s Berlinale.

Since its launch in 2004, the WCF has awarded production and distribution coin to a total of 102 projects from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Central and South East Asia, and the Caucasus. All of the films completed so far have screened in cinemas and/or in international film festivals.
