Locarno promises Mexican pics galore

Seven films to unspool in Carte Blanche

MADRID — Enrique Rivero’s “Mai morire,” Aaron Fernandez’s “The Empty Hours,” and Andrea Martinez Crowther’s “Ciclo” will screen at the Locarno Film Festival’s Carte Blanche pics-in-post showcase.

Featuring seven Mexican titles, the Carte Blanche spread is part of Mexico’s largest presence ever at the Swiss fest.

In another highlight, Gael Garcia Bernal, who will present Chilean Pablo Larrain’s Cannes hit “No,” in which he stars, will be awarded the Excellence Moet and Chandon prize. “Los mejores temas,” from Nicolas Pereda (“Perpetuum Mobile”), screens in competition.

Rivero’s soph pic, mother-daughter drama “Mai morire,” follows up “Parque Via,” which won Locarno’s top Golden Leopard in 2008. Paola Herrera produces at Una Comunion.

“Hours,” which Fernandez developed at Cannes’ Residence, follows on 2007’s “Used Parts,” which established him as a young talent to track.

Docu “Ciclo,” from Martinez Crowther, whose debut “Insignificant Things” was exec produced by Guillermo del Toro, is the latest film from fast-emerging Mexico City producer Arte Mecanica (“Days of Grace”).

Carte Blanche also features “Penumbra,” helmed by Eduardo Villanueva (“A Trip to Tulum”), which captures the conscience of an aged hunter in rural Mexico.

Taking place Aug. 4, Carte Blanche is rounded out by three feature debuts: sibling drama “The Tears,” from Centro de Captacion Cinematografica film school student Pablo Delgado Sanchez; Daniel Castro Zimbron’s desert-set fantasy “Tau” and Jimena Montemayor Loyo’s love triangle tale, “The Land of Nod.”

Carte Blanche pics compete for a $10,000 jury-awarded prize. The 65th Locarno Festival runs Aug. 1-11.
