‘Woman in Black’ tops Blighty B.O.

Radcliffe starrer brings in £3.1 million

Daniel Radcliffe has shown that he can open a pic in Blighty that doesn’t have “Potter” in the title.

Hammer’s “The Woman in Black” has done boffo box office biz, coming in at No. 1 with a £3.1 million ($4.9 million) weekend gross.

Pic, the highest opening ever for Hammer, earned an $11,843 per-screen average for distrib Momentum Pictures, the U.K. arm of Alliance Films.

The ghost story beat strong opposition from opener “The Muppets” and played across 412 cinemas in the U.K. and Ireland.

The impressive numbers follows last weekend’s strong U.S. release, where pic bowed with a $21 million gross through CBS Films.

“Woman in Black” is directed by James Watkins and adapted by Jane Goldman from the novel by Susan Hill.

Exclusive Media’s Hammer and Alliance Films produced and financed the $16 million chiller.

“This is Hammer’s first ghost story … it shows that British audiences enjoy intelligent genre,” said Exclusive Media vice chairman and Hammer prexy and CEO Simon Oakes.
