Winter debut chills Perry

'Good Deeds' struggles in February opening

Tyler Perry’s latest offering, “Good Deeds,” struggled in its late February debut weekend, a slot that’s outside of the filmmaker’s typical Easter weekend launchpad.

The Lionsgate pic earned $15.6 million domestically over the Feb. 24-26 frame, the second-lowest debut for the helmer and only the fourth time one of his films has opened to less than $20 million during its inaugural weekend.

Perry’s Madea pics are usually his most successful: “Madea Goes to Jail” bowed to north of $40 million in 2009, followed by 2006’s “Madea’s Family Reunion,” with a $30 million opening.

Perry’s dramas are generally slated as fall releases, such as 2010’s “For Colored Girls,” which opened to $19.5 million.

Still, “Deeds” is far from done. The pic, which toplines Perry, Thandie Newton and Gabrielle Union, saw the biggest Friday-to-Saturday uptick of any Perry opening, up 25%. That’s a particularly noteworthy improvement given the pic’s solid “A” CinemaScore rating.

Women rated the film best in exit polls, which could also mean good news, as femme auds tend to shy away from opening weekend. Men gave the pic an A- appraisal.

Perry doesn’t have long to wait to prove himself again. His next film, “The Marrige Counselor,” launches Stateside on July 27 via Lionsgate — the director’s first summer opening.
