‘Think’ tops newcomers at Friday B.O.

'Engagement' opens lower than expected; 'Avengers' hot overseas

While “The Avengers” continues to explode overseas, Friday’s team of domestic B.O. heroes were largely holdovers clustered in a tight pack at the top of the box office.

The day was taken by last week’s champ “Think Like a Man” from Sony with $5.5 million and a $48.4 million cume, followed by Warner Bros.’ “The Lucky One” with $3.9 million.

In third, Universal opener “The Five-Year Engagement” grossed $3.5 million. Pic is headed for a three-day take around $10 million, a significantly more conservative guess than pre-weekend estimates which had the film making almost twice that, though the studio’s own pre-weekend estimate was more modest. Pic cost $30 million to produce.

In its sixth weekend, Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games” earned $3 million, while Sony and Aardman Animation’s stop motion laffer “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” came in fifth with $2.8 million. Like this summer’s major tentpoles, Sony opened “Pirates” overseas before coming Stateside (Aardman is based out of Bristol, England), collecting more than $60 million in int’l coin so far.

Finally, newcomers “Safe” from Lionsgate and “The Raven” from Relativity Media run neck-and-neck, “Safe” with the leg up at $2.6 million to “Raven’s” $2.5 million. Both pics are headed for figures in the single digits through Sunday, which is little trouble for Relativity as it acquired “Raven” for $4 million.
