‘Spider-Man’ rises above ‘Dark Knight’ in China

Sony pic earns $5.46 million in debut compared to TDKR's $4.5 mil

Despite a superhero showdown between “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises” in China, both films scored impressive mainland debuts Monday.

“Spider-Man” landed on top with $5.5 million from 2,515 locations, pushing the pic past the $700 million global mark; “Dark Knight Rises,” which stands less than $60 million shy of $1 billion globally, scored $4.5 million at some 2,400 Chinese playdates.

China Film set a simultaneous opening for both tentpoles in a clear effort to limit Chinese box office. And while either film certainly would have earned more had it bowed separately, “Dark Knight Rises,” at least, scored Warner Bros.’ highest-ever 2D opening in China.

Fox’s “Prometheus” further clutters the Chinese B.O., bowing there on Sunday.

“Rises” beat the Chinese debuts of all “Harry Potter” pics (except the 3D finale), as well as Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” which debuted in China to $1.7 million in 2010.

Both “Spider-Man” and “Rises” screened in Imax, grossing a combined $1 million. That’s comparable to local openings of “The Avengers” and “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol,” though neither bowed on a Monday.
