Film played at 1,003 late-night domestic runs

Moviegoers partied it up Thursday at midnight, shelling out an estimated $1.15 million for Warner Bros.’ house party pic “Project X.”

The film played at 1,003 late-night domestic runs.

Midnight take positions nicely the R-rated “X” to hit (if not ecxeed) pre-weekend expectations in the high-teens.

By comparison, Lionsgate’s similar R-rated film “Kick-Ass” earned $1 million from midnight screenings, which translated into a $19.8 million opening around this time last year. Fox’s “Chronicle,” which debuted in three days to $22 million, started with $320,000 in late-nights — though that pic was rated PG-13.

Similar to “Project X,” “Kick-Ass” and “Chronicle” both targeted young men. “X” expands today to 3,055 domestic locations.
