Late-night take should translate into solid holiday weekend
“Men in Black” fans showed solid support for the franchise’s third installment Thursday, as the film grossed $1.55 million in midnight grosses.
Pic’s late-night take should translate into a $75 million-$80 million four-day take this Memorial Day weekend, though some bizzers anticipate the gross could be higher for “Black 3” — an upside of $90 million.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “Chernobyl Diaries” kickstarted a projected $12 million-$13 million four-day take with $525,000 in midnights.
There aren’t many strict comparisons for “Black 3” during Memorial Day weekend, since there are only a few films (i.e. 2004’s “The Day After Tomorrow,” at $85.8 million) that have bowed in the four-day tracking range of “Black 3.”
The three-quel’s midnight take also doesn’t account for family turnout, which will boost totals on Saturday and Sunday. Kids out of school on Monday with goose that day’s grosses, too.
“Black 3” launches day-and-date this weekend throughout the world in every major market, including China. Pic expands today Stateside to 4,248 locations.
