‘Madagascar 3’ tops overseas B.O.

'Prometheus' has strong second week in foreign markets

There was room at the international box office for both “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” and “Prometheus” over the June 8-10 frame, with Paramount launching the DreamWorks Animation three-quel in 28 territories to $77.3 million, while the Fox sci-fi pic earned a sizable sophomore take of $38.6 mil, to boost its international cume to $90.9 million.

Madagascar 3” earned top marks in Russia, with $16.4 million, slightly better than the franchise’s second offering in the territory. In Brazil, the pic took in $11 million, the nation’s best opening for an animated film. And in China, the toon reached $10.4 million, making it the second-highest start on the mainland for a foreign animated film (behind “Kung Fu Panda 2’s” $10.5 million in two days).

Madagascar” was able lead the overseas pack thanks in part to Fox having bowed “Prometheus” in some markets the week before it went out in the U.S.

Fox added 33 territories for the 3D sci-fier in its second frame internationally — but just five of them hit the million-dollar mark, including Australia ($7 million) and South Korea ($4.2 million). The Ridley Scott film remained on top in the U.K., with $5 million, for a local cume of $24.8 million.

The two films competed head-to-head in only a few major markets, including “Prometheus” holdover markets France and Russia, as well as debut territories India and Thailand. The Par toon easily beat “Prometheus” in Gaul, collecting $7.6 million vs. the sci-fier’s local sophomore outing of $3.9 million.

Par expanded “Madagascar” during the weekend of June 15 into 15 countries throughout Eastern Europe and the Middle East; “Prometheus” added key Latin American territories such as Brazil and Mexico.
