‘Les Mis’ on track for $80 mil through New Year

Universal musical earns $30.3 million in two days

Universal’s holiday B.O. treat “Les Miserables” continues to sing a healthy tune at the domestic box office: Having taken $30.3 million in two days, it’s poised to stay ahead of the weekend competition, with a potential cume of $80 million through New Year’s Day.

Domestic box office was expected to be robust this week as auds vacation through New Year’s. “Les Mis,” especially, will continue to attract women, who are now free to visit the multiplex after the busy pre-Christmas period.

On Wednesday, “Les Mis” earned $12.2 million Stateside, down 32% from its $18 million opening day, which was the best-ever midweek Christmas launch.

“Les Mis” led Warner Bros.’ “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which collected $11.4 million on Wednesday for a domestic cume nearing $180 million. The Weinstein Co.’s Christmas opener “Django Unchained” trailed with $10 million, bringing its two-day Stateside total to $25 million.

The other Christmas debut pic, Fox’s “Parental Guidance,” dropped just 32% from opening day, earning $4.3 million Stateside, with $10.6 million in two days.

Internationally, “Les Mis” reached $28.3 million, boosted by Boxing Day totals of $1.9 million in Australia. The pic bowed last week in South Korea and Japan, cuming $14.1 million and $8.6 million, respectively. Meanwhile, through Wednesday, “The Hobbit” crossed $344 million overseas and $500 million worldwide.

The market’s holdovers are similarly benefiting from the heightened holiday moviegoing: Paramount’s “Jack Reacher” and U’s “This Is 40” both fell less than 30% on Wednesday. “Jack Reacher” has collected more than $27 million domestically in six days; “This Is 40” moved north of $20 million.

Sony’s “Zero Dark Thirty” should cross $1 million Stateside through Thursday at just five coastal locations. Pic expands next week to roughly 60 engagements before going wide Jan. 11.
