‘Intouchables’ smashes rivals in Spain

TWC bows French B.O. behemoth May 25

MADRID

Box office for “The Intouchables,” which the Weinstein Co. will release on May 25 in the U.S., has hurtled past the B.O. of other movies released in Spain this year.

Distributed by Adolfo Blanco’s A Contracorriente Films, the French comedy racked up €11.1 million ($14.8 million) in its first six weeks through April 15.

“Intouchables” was France’s biggest-grossing film of 2011 with $159 million. B.O. outside France is $138 million from 15 million admissions, according to Unifrance.

Only three French-language films have sold more tickets outside France in the past 20 years: “Amelie” (23.1 million admissions), “March of the Penguins” (20 million) and “Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar” (15.9 million).

Topping the German charts for nine weeks, “Intouchables” has grossed $69.8 million to date. It scooped a first eight-week $17.7 million — and still counting — in Italy, becoming the biggest French film ever in both markets.
