‘Ice Age’ sequel adds $98 million more overseas

In its third overseas frame, Fox’s “Ice Age: Continental Drift” beat “The Amazing Spider-Man” to regain the top slot, grossing a chart-topping $97.6 million, bringing its international cume to an impressive $339.2 million.

The fourth “Ice Age” installment already has outgrossed the franchise originator, which took in $206 million overseas in 2002. The series’ third film, “Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” so far stands as the highest-grossing animated pic ever internationally, with $694 million; the franchise’s second outing, “The Meltdown,” grossed $457 million in 2006.

“Drift” should catch up to “Meltdown,” though the bar set by “Dinosaurs” in 2009 may be too high.

The toon franchise’s newest outing already has been released in 64 markets. Mexico ($35.3 million) is its top-grossing territory. Traditionally the franchise’s blue-chip markets, France and Germany, have contributed around $34 million each. The pic’s best recent debut came from Russia, where “Drift” grossed $17 million — edging past the country’s previous top opening this year, “Men in Black 3’s” $16.7 million.

In the U.K., “Drift” earned $8.9 million during its first local weekend of wide release, lifting its Blighty cume to $20.5 million.

“Spider-Man,” meanwhile, continued its high-flying offshore run, totaling $67.3 million in its third outing for an international cume of $321.2 million. Worldwide, the Spidey reboot has crossed the $500 million mark, thanks to an equally impressive domestic run, at $210 million through July 17.
