‘Evangelion’ breaks 2012 B.O. record in Japan

Toon earns $13.9 mil in two days

TOKYO

“Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo,” the third of four projected pics in the new “Evangelion” sci-fi toon series, has had the biggest opening weekend of any pic this year in Japan.

Bowing on 224 screens on Saturday, the toon earned $13.9 million in its first two days. This compares with $13.8 million for the first three days on 450 screens for the previous record holder, the fourth installment in the “Umizaru” Coast Guard action series.

The Wald 9 multiplex in Tokyo’s Shinjuku entertainment district opened the pic on all nine screens starting at six in the morning on Saturday and its opening day take of $228,219 from 10,671 admissions boosted the ‘plex to a new house record.

The quartet of pics, called “Rebuild of Evangelion,” retells an original series created by toon maestro Hideaki Anno for the TV Tokyo network in 1995. The series and spinoff feature toons attracted a devoted fan base, but Anno and his collaborators at the Gainax studio decided to make a new series using more advanced CGI and targeted at a wider audience.

The first entry, “Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone,” earned $25 million in 2007, and the second, “Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance,” $50 million in 2009. The third pic is expected to beat both.
