Open Road police drama on track to win weekend
Out of the weekend’s debut foursome, two pics pulled ahead of the pack, each estimating $4.6 million at the Friday box office: Open Road’s cop drama “End of Watch” and Relativity Media’s Jennifer Lawrence thriller “House at the End of the Street.”The odds favor “Watch” to win the weekend, however. While “End of Watch” and “House” secured a slight lead yesterday over Warner Bros.’ opener “Trouble With the Curve,” which started out with an estimated $4.2 million, the Clint Eastwood starrer should gain enough ground today to pass “House” for second place. “End of Watch,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena, should end up with nearly $14 million through Sunday, thanks to a healthy adult-driven Friday-to-Saturday bump. “House,” meanwhile, will drop through Saturday, with weekend totals for the pic likely landing somewhere in the $12 million range. If “Watch” wins, it’ll be the second time an Open Road-distributed film has done so, after “The Grey” won its debut frame earlier this year. And despite a strong critical response for the weekend’s fourth new entry, Lionsgate’s “Dredd” trailed with $2.2 million, ahead of the Weinstein Co.’s wide expansion of “The Master,” at $1.4 million. Both should land in the mid- single digits. Soph-sesh holdovers, “Finding Nemo” 3D and “Resident Evil: Retribution,” earned Friday $2.4 million and $2 million, respectively.
