Classic ploy for coin

Rialto Pictures re-issues hit B.O. sweet spot

Rialto Pictures has made a business of re-releasing (sometimes cult) classics, from Fellini’s “Nights in Cabiria” to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1990 sci-fi hit “Total Recall,” released to coincide with Sony’s recent remake. And while grosses for Rialto’s re-launches rarely overwhelm, the sheer number of titles keeps the distrib busy.

Rialto has four films currently in play: The distrib kickstarted 2012 with Mike Nichols’ 45th anniversary re-release of “The Graduate,” which bowed April 11 and has cumed $41,613 domestically, screening recently in a single location, the Angelika theater in Dallas.

The 75th anni edition of Jean Renoir’s “Grand Illusion” followed a month later, grossing an impressive $140,311 so far. Now playing at the Harvard Film Archive in Cambridge, Mass., the re-release marks the second theatrical engagement for “Illusion” via Rialto. The pic first grossed $342,979 after an impressive 28-week run that spanned parts of 1999 and 2000.

The distrib launched two more pics Aug. 10 in New York: Claude Sautet’s 1971 “Max and the Junkmen” (Max et les Ferrailleurs) at the Elinor Bunin Munroe plex, and “Total Recall,” at Film Forum.

“Max,” which scored $11,264 Aug. 10-12, nearly doubled “Recall’s” weekend gross, totaling $5,788. That’s likely due to the Bunin’s mostly adult turnout — the overwhelming supporters of such foreign-lingo re-launches as “Max.” “Recall,” meanwhile, marks Rialto’s only re-release whose original theatrical run fell during the past three decades.
