Batpic prevails over remake at domestic B.O.

Sony’s sci-fi reboot “Total Recall” struggled to find footing at the domestic B.O., with its $25.6 million bow overshadowed by Warner Bros. holdover “The Dark Knight Rises,” which won its third straight frame with $35.7 million.

The Sony pic scored only one of the weekend’s top 10 engagements (New York’s Empire 25, at No. 7), with “TDKR” dominating the other highest-grossing weekend locations.

Worse, “Dark Knight Rises” crippled “Recall” by appealing mostly to the same demographic: male teenagers.

It’s unlikely the sci-fier will reach six figures Stateside; in its second weekend, the pic runs squarely into similarly targeted “The Bourne Legacy” — and even R-rated laffer “The Campaign” will draw male teens. Bizzers expect “Total Recall” to cume, at most, nearly three times its domestic opening, putting the pic at around $75 million-$80 million.

Midweek earnings have been a bright spot for the Sony pic, which has suffered mixed reviews. While the film has trailed the Batpic during that timeframe, too, it has been at a respectable distance — and much closer than Fox’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.” That film figures to benefit more from kids and parents on summer vacation.

“Recall,” which stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel, so far has tallied $31.8 million domestically through Aug. 7, with an additional $6.2 million from just 12 smaller Asian markets; “TDKR” has reached north of $750 million globally.
