B.O.: ‘End of Watch’ wins by a nose

Crime drama ekes out victory over 'House' with $13.2 mil

Open Road’s “End of Watch” wound up the winner at this weekend’s tight domestic box office race, with actuals ringing in at $13.2 million.

Final figures for Relativity Media’s “House at the End of the Street” landed the pic in second place with a revised $12.3 million, down roughly 5% from the weekend take estimated earlier.

“End of Watch” and “House” were originally estimated to tie with $13 million each, while Warner Bros.’ “Trouble With the Curve” was close behind with a projected $12.7 million debut. “Curve” ended up with $12.1 million.

The B.O. win for “Watch” — and the second for Open Road after “The Grey” won earlier this year — isn’t too unexpected, however. Past comparisons show that similar R-rated and Hispanic-targeted films typically perform well on Sunday. “House,” meanwhile, likely suffered that day as its core teenage audience stayed home on a school night.

“Watch,” which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as police officers in South Central L.A., scored an A- CinemaScore, the best of the weekend’s wide releases.
