Released in theaters five months ago and fondly remembered by many as a pre-Toronto awards contender, “Moonrise Kingdom” has emerged on the kudo circuit with a best feature prize at the Gotham Awards.
“Moonrise” most notably topped “The Master,” along with fellow nominees “Bernie,” “The Loneliest Planet” and “Middle of Nowhere” – the latter featuring breakthrough thesp winner Emayatzy Corinealdi – while Benh Zeitlin took breakthrough director honors for another first-half release, “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
By finishing ahead of Quevenzhane Wallis of “Beasts,” Corinealdi might have gotten the most significant awards boost of anyone or anything in tonight’s small step of a long awards journey that continues Tuesday with the Independent Spirit Award nominations.
