Vietnam sends ‘Grass’ to Oscar

Nguyen Huu Muoi's pic has won a slew of local awards

BEIJING — The Vietnam War-themed drama “The Scent of Burning Grass,” from director Nguyen Huu Muoi, is Vietnam’s entry for the foreign language film Oscar.

Ngo Phuong Lan, director of the government’s film department, said an 11-member jury including representatives from the culture ministry, had chosen the pic, Thanh Nien Online reported.

Pic won the Vietnam Cinema Assn.’s Golden Kite Award in Hanoi, and also took prizes for script, cinematography and music.

It also was given a Certificate of Merit by the Ministry of Defense’s General Political Department for being the best movie about war and revolutionary ideals, the Vietnam News reported.

Vietnam has entered movies in the category 10 times since 1993, when Tran Anh Hung’s “The Scent of Green Papaya” was nominated.

Pic was produced by the state-run Viet Nam Television Film Studio Co.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 10. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
