‘Safety’ finds haven in Indiana

Safety
Last week, it was “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” getting three Golden Globe nominations. This week, the surprise news on the awards scene is the Indiana Film Journalists Assn. selecting “Safety Not Guaranteed” as its top film of the year.

I liked both films, though I wouldn’t suggest either was unsurpassed in 2012.

Indiana ranked “Safety” No. 1 ahead of runner-up “Beasts of the Southern Wild” (which won an award for original vision) and the remainder of a top 10 that included, alphabetically, “Django Unchained,” Les Miserables,” “Lincoln,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “The Sessions,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”

“Safety” writer Derek Connolly was also honored in the original screenplay category ahead of director honoree Quentin Tarantino and “Django,” while another underdog, Stephen Chbosky, won in adapted screenplay for “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” ahead of David O. Russell and “Silver Linings.”

Acting kudos went to Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Tommy Lee Jones and, in a tie, Bradley Cooper and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Thomas Newman earned top musical score for “Skyfall.”

“Rise of the Guardians” won in what has been a fractured field for animation this winter, while “The Raid: Redemption” topped “Amour” in foreign language. “Searching for Sugar Man” was named top doc ahead of “Room 237.”
