Moonrise

Veterans of the film academy, guild and festival awards circuits are sprinkled throughout the Cannes Film Festival lineup announced today. Here’s a sampling …

For starters, Cannes opener “Moonrise Kingdom” comes from Wes Anderson, nominated for an orignal screenplay Oscar in 2002 for “The Royal Tennenbaums” and top animated film for 2009’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Among its actors, “Moonrise” features past Oscar winners in Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton and past Oscar nominees in Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Harvey Keitel.

For the films in competition:

— Michael Haneke, winner of the 2009 Cannes Palme d’Or for “The White Ribbon,” returns with “Amour.” Isabelle Huppert, who won actress honors at Cannes for 2001’s “The Piano Teacher,” stars.

— Ken Loach, whose BAFTA history stretches back to 1971, has “The Angel’s Share.”

— Cristian Mungiu, 2007 Palme d’Or winner for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,” is back with “Beyond the Hills.”

—  Directors Guild team award winner David Cronenberg (2007’s “Eastern Promises”) has “Cosmopolis,” whose cast includes “The English Patient” Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche and past Academy nominees Paul Giamatti and Samantha Morton.

— Andrew Dominik’s “Killing Them Softly” features such award vets as Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini,  Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta and Sam Shepard.

— Fresh-pressed Oscar nominees Jessica Chastain and Gary Oldman, along with rising star Mia Wasikowska, are part of the ensemble in John Hillcoat’s “Lawless.”

— Abbas Kiarostami, who shared the 1997 Palme d’Or thanks to his “Taste of Cherry,” has “Like Someone in Love.”

— “Take Shelter” writer Jeff Nichols, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award last winter, has scripted and directed “Mud” with Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) and nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), not to mention Shepard, Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Paulson. Shannon, of course, starred in “Take Shelter.”

— Two-time BAFTA Film Award champ Walter Salles will arrive at Cannes with “On the Road,” whose cast full of past Oscar nominees includes three-timer Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen (“Eastern Promises”) and Terrence Howard (“Hustle and Flow”), as well as Emmy-nominated Steve Buscemi of “Boardwalk Empire” and Elisabeth Moss of “Mad Men.”

— After an Oscar nom for directing 2009’s “Precious,” Lee Daniels’ follow-up is “The Paperboy” with Nicole Kidman among its thesps.

— Alain Renais, whose kudo-worthy career includes Cannes nominations from 1959’s “Hiroshima Mon Amour” to 2009’s “Wild Grass,” has “You Haven’t Seen Anything Yet” with Mathieu Amalric (“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”) — Amalric himself was a director winner at Cannes 2010 for “On Tour.”

Among films screening out of competition are Philip Kaufman’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn” (starring Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman) and Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Me and You.”
