‘Only the Young’ tops Silverdocs

Pic wins Sterling Award for best U.S. feature at documentary fest

“Only the Young” has won the Sterling Award for best U.S. feature at the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival.

“Only the Young,” directed by Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, film follows three teens stuck in a chaste love triangle in a depressed Southern California suburb. The prize is accompanied by a $5,000 cash award.

The week-long festival included the screening of 114 films representing 44 countries, a free outdoor screening, live performances and a five-day professional documentary conference.

The Sterling Award for world feature went to “Planet of Snail,” directed by Seungiun Yi and centering on the deaf and blind South Korean poet Young-Chan

The Sterling Award for best short Film was given to “Kings Point,” directed by Sari Gilman.

A special U.S. feature jury mention went to “The Waiting Room,” directed by Peter Nicks. The world feature jury gave a mention to “Special Flight,” directed by Fernand Melgar.
