‘No Rest’ tops Spanish Goyas

Urbizu's cop drama takes six kudos

MADRID — Enrique Urbizu’s noirish cop drama “No Rest for the Wicked” won six prizes Sunday night at the 26th Spanish Academy Goya Awards, including film, director, original screenplay and actor for Jose Coronado.

Best actress went to Elena Anaya for Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In,” which also took breakthrough actor (Jan Cornet) original music (Alberto Iglesias) and makeup.

Spain’s Academy Awards were spread more evenly than at any Goya kudosfest in recent years, which could be seen as a sign of the quality of competing pics.

“No Rest” portrays police ineptitude in the run up to Madrid’s 2004 terrorist bombing.

Produced by Telecinco Cinema and Lazona, it’s Urbizu’s comeback after an eight-year hiatus. Pic cumed a standout $5.4 million B.O. in Spain, distributed by WB.

An autumnal Western starring Sam Shepard, Mateo Gil’s “Blackthorn” won four Goyas, including cinematography (Juan Antonio Ruiz Anchia).

Maria Leon, who won actress at September’s San Sebastian Festival, picked up the breakthrough perf Goya for her role in Benito Zambrano’s “The Sleeping Voice.”

Spain’s first robot film, “Eva,” won three Goyas, including first-time director for Kike Maillo.

In perhaps the biggest surprise of the night, Ignacio Ferreras’ senior citizen buddy comedy “Wrinkles” nabbed not only best toon but also adapted screenplay — beating Almodovar’s “Skin.”

Awaiting new subsidy regs and the introduction of anti-piracy legislation, local movie production is currently marking time. Just eight shoots have been announced for the first two months of 2012, 80% down on the 39 for the same period in 2011.

Spanish Academy prexy Enrique Gonzalez Macho called on the new Popular Party government to clarify its financial support for the local film industry.

He also lamented that, as yet, “the Internet does not form an economic part of Spanish cinema.”
