Next year’s Emmys are Sept. 22 — who will host?

Strangely having no concern for my daughter’s 11th birthday, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has scheduled the 2013 Primetime Emmys for Sept. 22, with CBS taking its turn at the broadcasting wheel.

Melissa2Now that that’s set, let’s open the hosting speculation, with the caveat being it is hugely, hugely likely that he, she or they will have a CBS connection.

Right off the bat, you have hosting vet Neil Patrick Harris (of CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother,” the Tonys and more), or the Eye’s latenight fun guy, Craig Ferguson. (David Letterman would certainly turn down any offer.)

“Two and a Half Men” mainstay Jon Cryer, whom the Academy loves, seems entirely capable of taking the reins, though we’ll rule out Angus T. Jones.  Past Emmy comedy actress pageant winner Melissa McCarthy of “Mike & Molly” would be a dynamic choice — in fact, she and Cryer actually make an intriguing combo. And don’t forget Kaley Cuoco (of monster CBS hit “The Big Bang Theory”),
who is approaching her second year emceeing the “People’s Choice

Or, for a little song and dance (and interrogation), there’s Mandy Patinkin from CBS sibling Showtime’s Emmy-winning “Homeland.”

If you want to think big and outside the box, Eddie Murphy, who was tapped to host this year’s Oscar ceremony before bowing out, is exec producing the CBS pilot adaptation of “Beverly Hills Cop.” Imagine a world where CBS greenlights that show and sets it to premiere Sept. 23, the morning after the Emmys.

Finally, it should also be noted that a Bob Schieffer-Lesley Stahl combination would knock it out of the park.
