Location pros who worked on Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” HBO’s “Luck,” indie feature “Hitchcock” and a commercial for action sports footware maker DC Shoes shared the honors at the 2012 California On Location Awards on Sunday at Pasadena’s Huntington-Langham hotel.
The COLA’s, organized by Film Liaisons in California Statewide (FLICS), a group that promotes in-state filmmaking, honor location managers and public officials who facilitate on-location production in the Golden State.
Location manager Chris Baugh won in the studio features category for “Argo,” which shot many scenes in California in addition to filming in the Washington, D.C. area and Istanbul.
Gregory Alpert, who won for episodic television, handled location work for “Luck,” which shot at the Santa Anita racetrack in Arcadia, Calif., before the Dustin Hoffman-starring series was shut down following two race horse fatalities.
Location shooting for “Hitchcock,” which filmed throughout the L.A. area, was guided by location manager Caleb Duffy. Supervising location manager Scott Allen Logan closed San Francisco streets and managed stunt driving sequences for “Gymkhana 5,” the DC Shoes spot.
COLA also honored assistant location managers Eva Schroeder for “The Client List” (television) and Keomanee Vilaythong for “The Dark Knight Rises” (films),
In a nod to the collaborative aspect of location work, COLA gave awards to location teams on the upcoming J.J. Abrams feature “Star Trek into Darkness,” TNT’s “Southland,” and Terrence Malick’s 2013 release, “Knight of Cups.”
CBS Productions scored the trophy for production company of the year for “The Amazing Race,” with Deven Chierighino serving as production manager. World Race Productions produces the show.
Public employee awards went to Greg Garrett, city manager of Tehachapi, Calif.; Tony Martinez of the Kern County fire department; John O’Rourke of Humboldt Redwood State Park; and Guy Langman of the U.S. Coast Guard.
COLA also honored two of its own: veteran line producer Rajan Shandil, producer and director of the COLA show; and John Brown of tech services shingle The Showpros, which has supported the COLA show since 2000.
