‘Bad’ is good for Peru

Garcia Montero's debut joins Oscar foreign lingo race

Peru is sending Rosario Garcia Montero’s feature debut “Las malas intenciones” (The Bad Intentions) to vie for a foreign language Oscar.

Coming-of-age pic revolves around a troubled 8-year-old girl who finds solace in the heroes of Peru’s turbulent past when her mother announces a baby brother is on the way.

Pic has won a string of awards since its world preem at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival where it was nommed for a Crystal Bear. At home, “Las malas intenciones” has garnered best film awards from Peru’s Premios Luces and the Lima Film Festival. Miami-based Ondamax Films handles international sales.

A three-member advisory committee composed of Peruvian Cultural Institute head Carmen Rosa Vergas, producer Rosario Lino and exhibitor Monica Ubillus, chose Garcia Montero’s drama over “Cielo oscuro,” “El buen Pedro,” “Reshinn, sangre de anaconda,” and toons “Lars y el misterio del portal,” “Guachmen” and “Los ilusionautas.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will unveil the five nominees for best foreign film on Jan. 10. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 24.
