Austria: FISA fund backs features

Location: Europe 2012 - Austria

With a budget of €20 million ($26 million), Austria’s FISA fund has backed 38 feature and documentary film productions since its launch in mid-2010.

In its first year, international co-productions accounted for more than a third of the total funded projects, among them Fernando Meirelles’ “360,” and more recently historical dramas such as Detlev Buck’s “Measuring the World” and Peter Sehr and Marie Noelle’s “Ludwig II.”

The Austrian government is likely to renew the FISA fund as it’s due to expire at the end of the year. In addition, the country’s film industry has achieved some success in lobbying the government to loosen strict guidelines in order to attract more international productions not only to Austria but also to the growing film production hub that includes Hungary and the Czech Republic, which offer top-notch studio facilities but lack some of the high-end infrastructure available in Austria.

Additional federal funding can be had from the Austrian Film Institute and the federal chancellor’s office as well as various types of support from Austria’s nine provinces.

Indeed, regional governments have been known to embrace flexible and innovative new solutions to help foreign producers shooting in the country, working with foreign producers on tax breaks and other incentives.
