‘Rio 2096’ toon targets adults

Gullane bring animated pic to international market

Sao Paulo’s Gullane, the co-producer of Berlin Competition screener “Tabu,” is bringing a new film onto the international market, Brazilian animated feature “Rio 2096,” targeting adult audiences.

Gullane also co-produced the $20 million “Amazonia,” a sales hit for Le Pacte at the European Film Market.

Directed by first-timer Luiz Bolognesi, a screenwriter whose credits include the Gullane-produced “Brainstorm” and “Birdwatchers,” “2096” turns on four key dates in Brazilian history: 1500, when it was discovered by Europeans; 1800, at the height of the slave trade; 1970, during military dictatorship; and 2096, in Brazil’s future.

“History is usually written by its winners. ‘Rio 2096’ is told from the viewpoint of its losers,” company founder Fabiano Gullane said in Berlin.

“Rio 2096,” which will be traditional cel animation, is part of Gullane’s animation drive. With RioFilmes, it is co-producing “Fishtronaut: The Movie,” a 3D feature spinoff of a hugely popular TV series, and 3D feature “Tarsilinha.”

“On ‘Rio 2096,’ we were attracted by the quality of the story. Brazil also lacks family entertainment produced out of Brazil,” Gullane said.

In further deals, Gullane said L.A-based Shoreline has acquired rights outside Brazil and Italy to Andreu Ristrum’s “My Country,” an Italian-Brazilian family drama. Deal was first discussed at Ventana Sur.

Starring Rodrigo Santoro, “Country” grossed more than $319,000 in Brazil, a nice performance for an artfilm in a territory where market share is dominated by Hollywood blockbusters.

Gullane has now greenlit teen musician friendship drama “Heliopolis,” from Sergio Machado (“Lower City”), to be distributed by Fox in Latin America. Co-staring Sandra Corveloni, Cannes’ best actress winner in 2008 for “Linha de passe,” pic will lense in May.
