On-demand TV revs to double in five years

Report says global take will hit $6 billion

LONDON — Global revenues from on-demand TV will hit $6 billion in 2017, up 54% from the 2011 take, with the U.S. and Italy leading the surge, according to U.K.-based research company Digital TV Research.

The On-Demand TV Revenue Forecasts report, which measures coin generated by movies and TV shows but excludes sports and adult fare, estimates that the U.S. will contribute $1.8 billion to the total in 2017, some 30%.

Italy will be in second place, generating $648 million, with China third at $550 million.

By region, North America and Western Europe will still supply 66% of global on-demand TV revenues by 2017, although this proportion is down from 75% in 2011.

On-demand TV revenues will increase by 145% in the Asia Pacific region over the same period to reach $1.38 billion in 2017, with China driving much of this growth.
