Newfangled history lesson

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' stakes thesp to insurance

History and vampires intersected — appropriately — at the June 18 preem of Fox’s bigscreen 3D adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” at AMC Lincoln Loews in Gotham.

Pic producer Tim Burton, a man with a penchant for darkness, said all he needed was the title to get onboard the project. “I thought, ‘I want to see this.’ It was the kind of movie I used to see as a kid — ‘Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde,’ ‘Blacula’ — all sorts of weird movies that I loved watching.”

As for his favorite vampire, Burton’s latest onscreen protagonist, Barnabas Collins, didn’t make the cut. “I grew up on Bela Lugosi; I grew up on Christopher Lee,” Burton said.

Benjamin Walker, who plays the 16th president, said he loved learning about Lincoln. “I think (his is) a story people need to know about, even if it’s in the context of some crazy vampires,” Walker said.

The actor’s first leading role is certainly surreal, but Walker was happy about one benefit in particular.

“I got health insurance, so I’m good,” he said.
