Industry tech leaders have predicted 3D will revolutionize television. But as episodic offerings in the format lag, some caution that TV is at the beginning of an evolution, not a revolution.

Tom Cosgrove, president and CEO of 3net, thinks 3D TV needs time — just as HD did — to catch on. Others think it will take more than that.

“We need more education about what 3D as a storytelling tool,” says Steve Schklair, CEO of 3ality Technica.

There’s another factor that’s crucial 3D TV: compelling content.

“Nonfiction shows like ‘Bullproof’ have been good 3D episodic programs for us,” says Craig Tanner, Digital Revolution Studios president. “There’s a lot of action and great characters.”

Networks are monitoring the success of the few existing 3D series.

“We had a lot of success with ‘River Monsters’ in 3D and we’ve talked about doing ‘Whale Wars’ that way but the cameras couldn’t take the demands,” says Jason Carey, VP of production for Animal Planet. “But 3D is definitely the future.”
