French VOD sales rise by 50%

Sales of DVD, Blu-ray discs fall 9%

PARIS — Revenues from video-on-demand transactions in France rose more than 50% last year to an estimated $302 million, while sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs fell 9% to an estimated $1.65 billion.

Overall, the market for DVD, Blu-ray and VOD dropped 3% to $1.9 million, but Blu-ray sales increased in volume by 20% to 10 million units sold, according to a study conducted by French video org Syndicat de l’Edition Video Numerique, and market research company GFK.

Jean-Yves Mirski, general manager of SEVN, said the drop in physical sales can be explained by the less attractive offer of comedy and action titles in 2011. Sales of new DVD releases fell 13%.

Mirski said piracy is slowing the growth of video sales, adding that the closure of file sharing websites Megaupload and Allostreaming is expected to bump up 2012’s figures.
